Case Study:
John Mills Electric Installation, Commercial Project
April 9, 2010
Elmira, New York
“The solar installation for my business takes care of over 40% of my electric needs. Government incentives and rebates eliminated more than 60% of the costs, and I’ll see lower utility bills for the next twenty-five years. And my business benefits from the greener image. It’s a win-win.”
Lindsay Mills, Owner and CEO, John Mills Electric
Background:
John Mills Electric’s building had a large expanse of unused roof space. When they branched into the solar business, they learned the financial benefits available for commercial properties. CEO Lindsay Mills chose to install a light commercial solar system on his roof in Elmira, New York.
Financial Incentive:
Due to high government incentives federally and in New York State, the original investment was reduced by more than 60%. The 84-panel system, on a sunny day, produces around 60 kilowatts of power. The money saved on electricity costs will save the customer nearly $20,000 over the lifetime of the system.
Results:
The 15 kW system will save approximately $2,000 annually at 2010 electricity prices and will provide a hedge against escalating energy prices. The system will also displace more than 15,000 pounds of CO2 per year, and generate more than 16,600 kWh of electricity annually.
System Specifications:
System Size: 15 kW
Date Completed: April 9, 2010
Installer: Twin Tiers Solar
Mount Structure: Flat Roof Mount
Cost Benefits:
Average Electricity Generated: 16,617 kWh/year
Savings: $1,957/year*
Lifetime Electricity Savings: $88,844*
*As electric rates go higher, costs savings will increase.
Environmental Benefits are Equivalent to:
CO2 Offset: 15,108 lbs/year
Waste Recycled: 8,400 lbs/year
Trees Preserved: 6 acres (around 4500 trees)/year
Gas: 1311 gallons/year (= taking 3.75 cars off the road each year)
