How Do You Know If Solar Is Right For You?

Case Study:

Joslyn Installation, Residential Project

January 7, 2010

Binghamton, New York

“I didn’t have the space available for a roof installation.  Earthsponse worked with me on other solar options, and the ground mount was the perfect solution for my property.”

Charles Joslyn, Homeowner, Binghamton, New York

Background:

Homeowner Charles Joslyn of Binghamton, New York had an interest in the environmental and economic benefits of alternative energy.  He chose to install a 5 kW ground mount solar system on his property. Because of space limitations to his roof and his desire for a larger residential system, a ground installation was the best fit for his home.

Financial Incentive:

Due to high federal and state government, Joslyn’s original investment was reduced by more than 65%.  The 28-panel system, on a sunny day, produces around 30 kilowatts of power.  The money saved on electricity costs will save this customer more than $30,000 over 25 years.

Results:

The 5.04 kW system will save approximately $776 annually at 2009 electricity prices and will provide a hedge against escalating energy prices. The system will also displace more than 8,000 pounds of CO2 per year, and generate more than 5,800 kWh of electricity annually.

System Specifications:

System Size: 5.04 kW

Date Completed: January 7, 2010

Installer: Prepared Power

Mount Structure: Ground mount

Cost Benefits:

Average Electricity Generated: 5844.5 kWh/year

Savings: $776/year*

25 Year Electricity Savings: $32,317*

*As electric rates go higher, costs savings will increase.

Environmental Benefits are Equivalent to:

CO2 Offset: 8,000 lbs/year

Waste Recycled: 2,800 lbs/year

Trees Preserved: 2 acres (around 1500 trees)/year

Gas: 437 gallons/year (= taking 1.25 cars off the road each year)

Jensen Installation, Residential Project
December 31, 2009
Binghamton, New York

”We wanted to ‘go solar’ mainly because of the environmental impact, but we also had to consider it as a practical investment for our home.  Our contractor, Prepared Power, helped us to clearly understand what would be involved in the project, both cost and benefits.  When we had all the facts, the decision to make the investment in solar energy was easy.  It is definitely a win/win situation for the environment and for us.”
